Gonzales Police thankful for holiday drive benefiting the needy

Gonzales, LA – We don’t even know where to begin in thanking you, our community and helpful organizations, for all you did to help us assist the needy in our area over the holidays. Your generous and loving spirits for all allowed us to make a real difference, and we are indebted to you for that.
We thought we’d let you know just what your assistance allowed us to do. It was a lot, so again we thank you!

Chief Sherman Jackson with donations from Needy of Greater Baton Rouge.

We served 123 elderly residents, including 14 personal and specific needs for residents of nursing homes without family, along with candy and cookie trays for each nursing home. Some staff, volunteers and the Junior Explorers were also able to spend time visiting at each nursing home with the residents. Initially we thought that time would mean so much to them, but it may have been us who benefited from their company. We urge anyone with a few hours to spare to spend time with one of our elderly residents. Their stories are abundant and beautiful.

Cub Scout Troop 469 donations given to Robin Brunke with City of Gonzales Police.

We were able to provide for 301 children including children at daycare centers, the St. Elizabeth Emergency Room and Surgical Care Unit, numerous foster children within the Department of Children and Family Services, Dream Home, Gonzales Primary School, Pecan Grove Primary School, G.W. Carver Primary School, and Gonzales Middle School. 72 of these children assisted were referred to our officers, many of whom took to their patrol units on their own time to personally hand out toys and supplies.
Along with those of you who gave so selflessly, we extend an enormous thank you to Needy of Greater Baton Rouge, Lori Charlet and her Santa on da Porch crew, Cub Scout Pack 469, and countless Secret Santas who wish to remain anonymous.
We’re already planning for 2019, and we will be accepting donations or donated items throughout the year. Along with what we do for the little ones in our community, we are also looking to branch out and address the needs of our teenagers and continue our focus on the elderly.
