Chamber of Commerce supports Hotel Occupancy Tax

On behalf of our 2018 Board of Directors, I am writing to express the Ascension Chamber of Commerce’s support for the proposed 2% Hotel Occupancy Tax increase for the City of Gonzales. We recognize that the additional 2% would take the overall lodging tax to 13.5% bringing Gonzales closer in line with neighboring cities, Baton Rouge and New Orleans who are at nearly 16%.

It is our understanding that the funds generated by the additional 2% increase would be dedicated for the construction and support of a state of the art convention center that will attract out of town visitors to the city creating a significant economic opportunity thus supporting the Ascension Chamber’s mission to facilitate and foster economic growth for our members and community.

The Ascension Chamber is keenly aware of the importance of visitors and the influence they have on our local economy. The increased visitors to our area resulting from the creation of a convention center would not only provide direct support for our current hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments but would also spark further investment in our community.

We view this proposed guest-paid surcharge as a driver of increased economic activity for the City of Gonzales as well as Ascension Parish and offer our full support.

Ascension Chamber Board of Directors
