APSO holds fitness camp for youth in Donaldsonville

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office held its first free physical fitness training camp last Saturday, June 2 at the Hickley M. Waguespack Center in Donaldsonville.

The camp’s goal was to provide the student athletes at the middle and high school level the knowledge and understanding on enhancing their strength, endurance, and speed.

The camp instructor was Deputy Livingston Alfred, who also works as a fitness trainer in his spare time.

Deputy Alfred provided exercises to help prevent injury and strengthen muscles along with some nutritional guidelines for the student athletes to follow.

“The camp not only was a physical test but students were also provided with the classroom lecture on the importance of planning, which includes diet, rest, and recovery methods to gain maximum performance,” said Deputy Alfred.

The camp began at 8:30 a.m. and the student athletes were ready to learn.

This camp was the first of its kind to be held at the Hickley M. Waguespack Center, however, more events like such are in the planning stages for future events.
