Libertarian Party opposes A Better Ascension proposal

We, the Libertarian Party of Ascension Parish, declare strong disagreement with the efforts of “A Better Ascension” to effectively remove the position of Parish President from the Home Rule Charter of Ascension Parish. Accountability of government leadership to a voting constituency is a cornerstone of a representative republic.  We firmly believe that the people of Ascension parish are capable of direct selection of their leadership.  In the spirit of the phrase “For the people, by the people,” we feel the removal of the Parish President position and replacing it with a Parish Manager, picked by the business interests of the parish, removes both of these stipulations.  This new parish manager will not answer to the voting public nor will the position be available to anyone called to public service. In addition to removing our vote for the head executive in the parish, the proposed charter also removes crucial checks on executive power by transferring certain powers of the council to the parish manager. We will be losing one of only two representative bodies that exist in parish government, and our sole remaining representative body will be handcuffed from checking executive actions. Forfeiting one of the very few avenues of representation and accountability to a manager who was not directly elected by the citizenry is a step in the wrong direction.  Ascension parish government will look less like am American democratic republic and more like an oligarchy.

The National Libertarian Party’s platform states: “Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of individual liberty, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to agree to such new governance as to them shall seem most likely to protect their liberty.” After examining the charter amendments, we do not recognize this as a replacement system that will likely protect our liberty.  The Libertarian Party of Ascension Parish wholeheartedly denounces any and every attempt to push this agenda forward.
